Genacol Canada Corporation Inc. manufactures a bovine-sourced hydrolyzed collagen supplement (Genacol®**Original Formula), which has shown efficacy in two separate clinical trials for reducing joint pain. Following**digestion, hydrolyzed collagen yields bioavailable amino acids and peptides that can lead to the**health-promoting properties of the supplement. There is presently, however, no information as to whether the**peptides can survive digestive processes in order to exert prebiotic effects on probiotic bacteria as this could be**a mechanism for the joint health benefits of the product. A research challenge is that typically studies**examining prebiotic properties of food components use fermentors without consideration of the digestive**processes of the stomach and small intestine. In the present study, digestion of the stomach and small intestine**in a dynamic simulated gut digestion model will be used to generate peptides that can be tested for their**prebiotic properties with fermentors containing probiotic bacteria. This approach is the first step towards**identifying whether the Genacol collagen hydrolysate has prebiotic properties that can be promoted and**examined as a mechanism of action for the reduction of joint pain seen with this product.
