Provision of safe water to consumers is a key feature associated with water purveyors. Water as provided by**water purveyors must be 'safe' in terms of water quality as a paramount concern. This necessarily requires the**water treatment system to be proactive to ensure the quality of the source water is adequate, and the treatment**technologies are responsive to the quality of the water being drawn into the treatment plant intakes.**For Lake-based threats as is the situation for the Region of Peel, there is a lake hydrodynamic model; however,**water treatment needs adjustment as a result of increases in turbidity and algae near the intakes, following**storm and snowmelt events. The primary sources of increased turbidity and phosphorus are the suspended**solids and nutrients delivered to the Lake from watersheds by the water courses. This research will be**developing a watershed model to estimate loadings of nutrients delivered to Lake Ontario from the Credit**River, so that retrofit efforts can be prioritized. As well, the research will provide real-time Total Suspended**Solids (TSS) and phosphorus concentrations from the Credit River close to the Peel Region treatment plants.**This information would then be taken as input by Peel's Lake model to estimate, in real-time, TSS**concentrations close to the intakes and provide the plant manager the opportunity to adjust treatment**operations.
