The objective of the proposed project is to fabricate and test prototypes of a novel nasal interface for use in delivering home oxygen therapy. The interface includes air entrainment ports of adjustable open area, which allows for regulation of the pressure signal used by oxygen delivery devices to sense patient inspiration and trigger oxygen delivery. When used with a portable oxygen concentrator, the nasal interface will improve triggering efficiency, thereby providing a single source solution to a patient's daytime and nighttime oxygen needs. Costs and complexity of maintaining multiple oxygen delivery devices (stationary and portable sources) in the patient's home would be eliminated. In addition, a single 24-hour portable oxygen source would allow patients the convenience of travel including overnight stays away from home, without sacrificing oxygenation. The proposed reduction-to-practice project will provide key data demonstrating the improved oxygen delivery achieved using the nasal interface with commercial portable oxygen concentrators.
