Surgical Data Science

This research program will concentrate on Surgical Data Science, specifically on novel technologies for minimally invasive medical interventions performed under computational image guidance. I aim to transcend human limitations in the accuracy and precision of image-guided intervention performance and in training physicians for these procedures. Specifically, I will develop and translate to actual clinical practice the following innovative methods: (1) novel electromagnetically navigated instruments, intra-operative biomechanical image fusion methods and surgical navigation software for soft tissue tumor resection, first demonstrated in breast cancer surgery; (2) a new generation of training methods and systems for quantitative skill and competence assessment in image-guided needle placement intervention training.
