Organic solar cells (OSCs) utilize carbon based semiconductors instead of the conventional silicon based materials, which represents significant reductions in manufacturing and energetic costs. The objective of our proposed project is to leverage our recent research results in this area and focus on the development of functional organic materials that will enable the fabrication of OSCs on light weight plastic substrates using a variety and combination of manufacturing methods. We will target improved performance and stability of the resulting OSCs through combining solution and vapour processing. This project will have a dynamic feedback loop considering a variety of results as we move forward towards a firm OSC prototype design. In addition to manufacturing, we will also identify sustainable, scalable and energy responsible chemical manufacturing processes for the production of boron subphthalocyanines (BsubPcs) and silicon phthalocyanines (SiPcs), materials which will be implemented into our OSC design. Through this partnership between the University of Toronto, University of Ottawa, Xerox Research Center of Canada and 1-Materials, we expect to clearly define a pathway to commercialization for OSCs through device manufacturing and chemical manufacturing.
