In this project, McMaster will team up with NanoXplore and Nissan to develop novel graphene-based materials as next generation supercapacitor materials, and to integrate these developed graphene-based materials into advanced supercapacitor devices for automotive applications in electric vehicles. Supercapacitors are a category of energy storage devices that store energy by an electrical double-layer mechanism using electrostatic ion adsorption at the electrode surface. They have high power densities, so can be very complementary to batteries in electric vehicle fleets to improve driveability and performance. NanoXplore is a Canadian-based manufacturer and supplier of graphene materials, and Nissan is a global leader in automotive manufacturing and electric vehicles, representing ideal and complementary partners for this project. This project will train research personnel, along with developing new materials and energy storage technologies that can be commercialized for the economic benefit of Canada. Furthermore, by improving the performance and driveability of electric vehicles, they will be able to capture an increasing share of automotive vehicle markets, providing environmental benefits in the form of carbon emission reduction.
