Over the years, technology has generated countless opportunities and resources which have shaped the way we live and interact with the world. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, are undeniably among the most significant technological advances of the past few decades. Drones are becoming crucial in countless applications such as search and rescue operations, infrastructure inspection, and package delivery, to name a few. This technology has huge potential to play a major role in the world's future landscape, contributing to the creation of many businesses and jobs. According to a recent report by MarketsandMarketsTM, the overall UAV market is estimated to be USD 27.4 billion in 2021 and is projected to reach USD 58.4 billion by 2026. Despite the tireless efforts of the research community and the steady progress in this field, there are still several technical issues that need to be worked out to pave the path forward to fully autonomous UAVs.The most challenging technical hurdles to overcome are related to the development of reliable localization, perception, control, and decision-making systems that can handle highly unpredictable and extreme situations. The proposed research project, in collaboration with the Canadian industrial partner Quanser, aims to address some challenging issues pertaining to the design and real-time implementation of reliable vision-based inertial navigation systems for UAV applications in GPS-denied environments, taking into consideration the practical limitations of the sensors. Quanser will bring the required practical expertise and infrastructure to test and validate our autonomous navigation algorithms, which will allow an effective translation of our theoretical research developments into industrial-grade products.#(cr)#(lf)Au fil des ans, la technologie a généré d'innombrables opportunités et ressources qui ont façonné notre façon de vivre et d'interagir avec le monde.
