Bélair Mechatronics Inc. ("Belair") is a state-of-the-art manufacturing enterprise located in the heart of the Kawartha Lakes Region. The company's core business focus is on the design and manufacturing of hydraulic circuits, systems and components to be used in the fluid power industry. The company is seeking assistance from Fleming College with the development of a wireless tag-based system to allow for the tracking and condition monitoring of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinery tools. Belair is in the process of developing a "smart factory" using interconnected tools and equipment to enable true data-driven monitoring and optimization of their manufacturing processes. Overall, the company's goal is to further develop smart manufacturing operations that will result in low embodied greenhouse gas emissions and the lowest cost per part for the industry, all while maintaining quality. Through robust block design, manufacturing technological process innovations, and predominantly automated operations, with a smart factory the company can produce relatively low volume batch sizes at a dramatically reduced cost. Designing and developing a wireless tool tracking system unique to the company's operations is challenging and outside of the knowledge base of the company. Working collaboratively, Belair and the research team will design and develop a custom tracking system that will meet the company's needs and further their efforts in creating a sustainable smart factory. When small Canadian manufacturers such as Belair provide their customers with custom components, Canada's industries decrease their reliance on foreign-made parts. Relying on Canadian-made components will see economic benefits, as well as job growth and sustainability, in the advanced manufacturing sector and their clients.
