Development of plastic-free dispenser components using home-compostable materials

A variety of household cleaning products, such as glass and window cleaner, require the use of spray bottles.While plastic or glass bottles can be recycled, plastic spray nozzles cannot and must be thrown into thegarbage. For consumers looking to eradicate single-use plastics from their life, there are no plastic-free spraydispensers available on the market. For this project, Fleming College will collaborate with Ontario-based Etee("everything touches everything else"), to develop and create a proof-of-concept compostable spray nozzlemade entirely without petrochemical-based plastic.Fleming College's experts in advanced manufacturing and 3D printing will assist the company in developingand creating components for the novel spray nozzle unit. Etee has a proprietary wax and bio-resin blend used topackage their liquid concentrate products; this project will investigate the use of that technology, as well asother eco-friendly materials that may be suitable for the nozzle components. Key design and productionconsiderations include the aesthetic and functional design of the unit, the universality of the screw cap, methodof final production, as well as the specific Etee product chemistries that will be sprayed. The final product ofthe research will be a proof-of-concept plastic-free spray nozzle that Etee can move forward in thedevelopment/production process. The benefits to Etee include an increase in sales and revenue as well as alarge step forward towards fulfilling their mission of increasing the consumer use of plastic-free products.
