Acquisition of an Electron Spin Resonance Spectrometer

电子自旋共振（ESR）光谱学允许化学家对含有未配对电子（顺磁性化合物）的材料进行极其精确的高分辨率研究。这些研究揭示了其他任何技术都无法获得的分子结构信息。这项来自化学共享仪器计划的资助将帮助哥伦比亚大学化学系获得一台ESR光谱仪。此次收购将加强的化学研究领域包括：1)无机配合物在探测生物聚合物中的发展和应用2)稳定自由基和双自由基的制备3)探测电子和电荷转移过程的分子设计和实验4)利用磁场、磁同位素和磁共振效应对光化学过程的影响5)ESR方法研究自由基气相化学反应。

Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectroscopy allows chemists to conduct extremely precise high resolution studies on materials containing unpaired electrons (paramagnetic compounds). Such studies reveal information on molecular structure that is unavailable by any other technique. This award from the Chemistry Shared Instrumentation Program will help the Department of Chemistry at Columbia University to acquire an ESR spectrometer. The areas of chemical research that will be enhanced by the acquisition include the following: 1) Development and application of inorganic complexes to probe biopolymers 2) Preparation of stable radicals and diradicals 3) Design of molecules and experiments to probe electron and charge transfer processes 4) Use of magnetic field, magnetic isotope and magnetic resonance effects on photochemical processes 5) ESR methods for the study of free radical gas phase chemical reactions.
