This project aims at a thorough analysis of the 926 private letters that the orientalist Johann Gildemeister (1812-1890) sent to his family during the years from 1832 until 1890. These documents have been kept in the archive of the University of Bonn. After having skillfully edited the whole bundle of papers during the last 36 months we would like to come to a monographic interpretation of the texts. We continue to place special emphasis on (1) the history of German Orientalism, (2) the person Johann Gildemeister and (3) the University of Bonn during the 19. c.
