With this award from the Chemistry Research Instrumentation and Facilities: Departmental Multiuser Instrument Acquisition (CRIF:MU) Program, the Department of Chemistry at the University of California in Riverside will acquire a liquid chromatograph-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LCMS) system. Projects of the major users include: synthesis of combinatorial libraries used in chemical genomics; discovery of unknown/unprecedented chemical reactions; analysis of natural peptides for racemization; preparation of conjugated helical oligomers having a dipole moment that scales with molecular length; development of new carbene pincer complexes as catalysts for novel organometallic transformations like hydroamination; and development of new cyclic carbenes as superior ligands, including asymmetric ligands, for organometallic transformations. The instrument will also be used by other researchers at UC-Riverside and in undergraduate lab instruction.Liquid chromatography with mass spectrometric detection is an extremely powerful technique used for the separation and analysis of complex mixtures. This instrument will not only serve chemistry, it will contribute to advancing knowledge in fields such as plant cell biology and materials science.
