AbstractProgram: NSF 04-588 CISE Computing Research InfrastructureTitle: CRI: A Linux Cluster for Space-Time Parallel Algorithms in Computational Nanotechnology and Education in Parallel Computing Proposal: CNS 0551472PI: Chandra, NamasInstitution: Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Researchers and educators at Florida A&M University (FAMU) and Florida State University in the joint college of Engineering will acquire a Linux Computer Cluster for developing space and time parallelization algorithms for molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of carbon nanotubes, and for education and training in the area of parallel computing. The project will enhance research in the area of parallel algorithm development both in space and time domains for computational nanotechnology applications. In addition, the cluster will enable the Department of Computer and Information Systems (CIS) at FAMU to train undergraduate and graduate students in the area of parallel computing. The cluster will be used in the following collaborative research projects: 1) Nanotechnology Exploratory Research (NER): Scalable Techniques and Algorithms for Massively Parallel Nanomaterial Simulation for Long Time Behavior 2) Developing fine grained spatial parallel algorithms to simulate the mechanical Behavior of Carbon Nanotube based Composites and, 3) Developing interactive MD visualization tools for Sensor applications. In education, FAMU, an HBCU, currently has a Masters in Software Engineering Sciences (MSES) and is seeking a doctoral degree program. This cluster will facilitate advanced training and research for both students and faculty at FAMU and thus position the computer and information systems department at FAMU to develop a PhD program. The cluster will enable the education and training components of the proposal in the area of parallel computing, specifically focusing on students from CIS/FAMU.
