ABSTRACTARC 0638897This research project, PI Astrid Ogilvie, is the US portion of a larger international collaboration that was conceived under the European Science Foundation, EUROCORES Programme, BOREAS. The full ESF project is a collaboration of researchers from 4 countries, including the US, Canada, and Iceland. This particular project, which represents the US NSF contribution to the BOREAS effort, focuses on the theme of social and cultural adaptation to environmental change in the northern boreal regions of Norway, Iceland, Canada, and Alaska. By collecting and analyzing historical documents from official and individual sources: diaries, expedition notes and publications, farm records, and ethnographic narratives, as well as geologic, oceanographic, and archeological data, the researchers will examine a 300 year record of climate change and human adaptation and resilience to environmental change.
