The previous experience during the first period of the KFO showed that a clinical research unit largely depends on cooperations and interactions in between the participating research groups coming from different disciplines of basic and clinical research. If the cooperations are well coordinated, common resources can be shared and used, which constitutes to a large extent the added value of such a consortium. One of the main goals of TP9, thus, will be coordination of the planned research projects, the future development of communication-platforms formed during the first period of the KFO and to intensify exchange of data and results to generate novel hypotheses and to transfer those into experimental studies. Particularly, we will try to promote translational approaches to bring platelet biology closer to clinical applications. TP 9 furthermore organizes training-, teaching and exchange programs for young researchers and meetings and conferences for the KFO, for which we will also invite speakers from outside. Moreover, TP 9 integrates and works on further extension of the patients database and its crosslinking with the existing electronic patient record, the organisation of and supply of the different TPs with central services (animal models) and the public relations concerning the KFO (homepage, virtual administration). We managed to aquire Prof. Klaus Ley (Division Head und Professor; Autoimmune Research; Inflammation Biology, La Jolla) for a potential appointment as Mercator-Professor integrated in the KFO, if granted by the DFG. Prof. Ley is a renowned expert in the area of platelet function and their relevance to tissue- and vascular inflammation. The implementation of the Mercator-Professorship for Prof. Ley in the 2nd period of the KFO will eventually advance the consortium as he is an internationally respected researcher and his participation will clearly increase the international visibility of our KFO 274.
