General population effectiveness of a smoking cessation counseling approach

Our previous research revealed that smoking interventions provided via a computer expertsystem and brief counseling by a physician were promising approaches with respect to efficacy, i.e. under ideal study conditions. Currently, we conduct a study testing the degree of implementation, which could be reached in every day clinical practice among general practitioners. Objectives: To test the effectiveness of interventions under routine conditions. Methods: In a randomized controlled trial, 150 randomly selected general practices are currently being included. The procedure comprises the implementation of 1) an on-site computer expert-system intervention, 2) a counseling intervention provided by the practitioner, or 3) both interventions. Main outcome measures at the patient level will be collected 12 months after intervention. Work program: Investigating the patients that take part in the ongoing implementation study. Expected impact: The results of this study will provide knowledge on the effectiveness of different strategies of implementing interventions. Funds requested: Our grant proposal includes the evaluation at the patient level. Own contribution: The implementation study is financed by the German Ministry of Education and Research that was limited to support of the development of medical care elements.
