项目摘要

2019年度はコロナ禍のためできなかったブータン調査を2020年12月末におこなった。2019年の調査地、チメラカン（プナカ）とクブン寺（ポプジカ）を経由して感覚を取り戻しつつ、トンサ地区のベンジ（ベンブジ）村を訪れた。ベンジはボン教徒の隠れ里だが、ブータン国内でもあまり知られていない。チベットを統一した最初の王朝、吐蕃の初代王ソンツェンガンポは仏教に帰依したが、当時は先行するボンの力がなお強く、仏教に大きく舵を切ったのは8世紀のティソン・デツェン王であった。王には後継権を有する王子が4人いた。3人は王の意志に従い仏教に帰依したが、1人の王子がボン教に固執する。命令に叛く王子に王は告げた。「都のラサにいても、お前は生きのびることができない。遠い南の彼方に逃げてボンを信仰しなさい」と。その王子が逃げ落ちて定着した村がベンジという伝承を村人が共有している。村では、まず翌日の祭祀のためボンの幡を新調する儀式を見学し、その後、封建領主の館ナグツァンの三階奥にあるボン教秘奥の間を視察した（撮影不許可）。その部屋はセンデンデワ開山と伝えるクブン寺の秘奥の間と同じく黒で塗りつぶされ、黒い髑髏が諸処にあしらわれている。部屋規模はベンジの方が一回り大きく、しかも内部の隅に地域の守護神ムクツェンの像（人間と等身大）が祀られていた。これまでハ地区の民家仏間脇壁で赤鬼ジョウと青鬼チュンドゥ、クブン寺本堂仏壇隅で魔女アムチョキムを見た経験はあるが、ボン教専門の祭祀部屋で守護神をみるのは初めてのことだった。なお、帰国の前日、パロのゾンドラカ寺本堂の片隅でムクツェンに似た像、境内の一部でボンの幡を確認した。このように、従前は仏教寺院の一部にボン的または非仏教的信仰要素を確認するにとどまっていたが、ベンジのナグツァンではボンの部屋でボンの主神を確認できたことは衝撃であり、今後の調査で理解を深めていきたい。
