Suppressing brake vibrations by deliberately introduced damping

Brake vibrations are a typical example of NVH (noise, vibrations harshness) problems in automotive industry. Costs of development processes of automotive brakes are nowadays dominated by optimization with respect to the NVH behavior. The aim of this project is to optimize brakes with respect of being calm and smooth, i.e. the opposite of being noisy, showing vibrations and harshness by using deliberately introduced damping. The project intends to model the influence of different damping ressources in brakes especially focusing on shims.Such devices are used especially in automotive disk brakes for the suppression of squeal. But so far, the state of the art of understanding of the working principle as well as the modeling is very weak. The project aims to experimentally investigate and to model the behavior of shims. These models are introduced into large FE codes of complete brakes and the stability behavior of the entire system is investigated.
