本研究は、バナナという作物を比較の軸として用い、農民の戦略という視点から比較することで、穀物を中心として国民単位で考える食料主権とは異なる食料主権のあり方を考える。これまで蓄積したバナナ栽培と利用に関する基礎的資料の追加に加えて、国家単位と地域単位の農業史と農産物の流通史の調査を行う。また、各地で収集した品種のサンプルのDNAを解析し、地域内の品種間の遺伝的多様性と、各地の品種間の遺伝的距離を測定し、バナナ栽培の歴史を復元することを目的としている。これまでに、国内で、沖縄本島、小笠原諸島、八丈島の「島バナナ」をはじめとする各種バナナのサンプルを採取し、あわせて、各地で、バナナの移動に関する聞き取り調査を実施した。また、パラオで品種に関する聞き取り調査を実施し、国内で採取したサンプルを加えて系統解析をした結果、19世紀以降、小笠原諸島、八丈島、琉球列島、パラオなど、歴史的に「日本」に含まれる／含まれない、地理的にオセアニアの一部とされる地域が密接な交流を持つことがわかった。バナナの品種分析が、オセアニア・アジアの地域史と農の歴史を明らかにすることが見えてきた。アフリカでは、遺伝子組換えバナナの開発が行われているウガンダにおいて、農家の品種選択における主権に関する論文を出版し、国際学会で発表した。また、代表者は、チームによるこれまでのバナナ研究を一般向けにまとめ、「バナナの足、世界を駆ける-食と農の人類学」という著書を出版し、料理バナナという国家から補足されずに残った主食作物が、食料主権に資する可能性について論じた。
