子どもにとって,その生活している環境で使用される言語の理解・獲得は重要な課題である。そのような言語の中でも，我々が「無意識に」使用している言語的コミュニケーション形態として,「あっ」や「えい」，「うわっ」などの間投詞発話がある。間投詞は，文脈や環境に応じて，異なる間投詞を用いるが，その意味や使用について，「驚いたときは，『あっ』と言うんだよ」といったような明示的な指導を行うことはあまりない。そこで幼児期において間投詞の解釈がどのようにされているかについて,実験的検討を行った。実験は，間投詞発話がある文脈の動画における発話者同定（「その文脈の中で誰が声を出したか」）によって,間投詞の理解，特に心的状態の一つである意図を表す発話の理解についての実験的検討を行った。実験で使用した文脈は，視覚的な情報により，意図的な行為をした者がわかるようになっており，これが，「意図があること」を示す間投詞とつながって，「その人物が発話をした」と解釈されるかを検討した。実験は，予備実験をもとに，4歳から6歳の幼児を対象として実験を行った。実験の結果，4～6歳の幼児は，「えい」という間投詞を「あっ」や「うわっ」といった間投詞よりも「意図をもって行われた行為の行為者」と結びつけて解釈しており，間投詞語彙の種類によって，発話者の判断が異なることが示された。このことは，日常生活の中で，子どもが，何気なく発話している身近な大人の間投詞発話を，大人による明示的な指導があまりない場合であっても，その文脈と結びつけて学習している可能性を示唆している。なお，この研究の一部は，COVID-19の流行に伴い，非対面式のオンライン調査を行った。
