モダリティ表現（「かもしれない」）が，過去を表す形態素（「た」）と用いられた場合の意味についての分析を，エヴィデンシャリティを表す表現（「らしい」）および過去を表す形態素（「た」）と比較しながら行った。日本語の例に加えて英語の対訳も収集することで，日本語と英語におけるモダリティ表現やエヴィデンシャリティ表現の現れ方を比較することができた。多くの場合「かもしれなかった」や「らしかった」は「話し合い」では用いられず，小説の「語り」で用いられる。また工藤（1995）で指摘されているように，小説の「語り」では「話し合い」と違って，過去を表す形態素（「た」）は，現在や未来を表す形態素（「る」）と入れ換えても意味の理解が損なわれないことが多い。丹波（1992）は上のような表現の過去形は，共時視点（推量）と回想視点（過去として語る）の二つの視点の共存であると述べている。これらの先行研究にならいつつ，Abrusan (2021) の枠組みを援用して，日本語の例と英語の例を比較し記述することを試みた。この内容は，日本英語学会第40回大会シンポジウム Tense: Comparison between Japanese and English にて，Some Evidential and Epistemic Markers, Past Tense Morpheme, and Perspective Shift というタイトルで発表を行った。ただしAbrusan (2021) やそこで使われている例と，日本語における「語り」の描写では描かれ方が違う点，特に英語では３人称という視点が明確であるのに対し，日本語では３人称小説であっても語りは作中人物に寄り添った視点になる点について，このことをいかした提案を行うに至らなかった。最終年度は視点を考慮しつつ，日本語のモダリティ表現について，英語などの言語におけるモダリティ表現と比較しながら，分析し記述する。
