個人にとって望ましい行動が、社会的には望ましくない結果につながるという社会的ジレンマは、社会に多くの問題を生んでいる。一方、こうした問題を自発的な取り組み（自主管理）によって解決しているコミュニティが多々存在することが、コモンズのフィールド調査によって分かっている。本研究では、先行研究においてそうした成功条件と密接な関係があることが明らかになっている3つの要素、メンバーの多様性、リーダーシップ、コミュニケーションに注目して、これらが互いにどのように関連して成功を左右し得るのかを実験的な手法で検証する。メンバーの多様性として、ある人達の資源利用によって他の人達が影響を受けるような状況を共有資源ゲームにて設計した。こうした状況は、例えば、上流の農家や工場など資源を積極的に利用するグループと彼ら上流の利用によって自らの資源の利用の効用が決まる下流の住民などのグループによる資源の利用等が考えられる。実験の結果から、不利な状況の利用者の存在自体が、有利な状況にある利用者の行動を変えることはなかったが、このような多様な利用者がいる状況において双方向のコミュニケーションの有用性が示された。しかし、有利な状況にある利用者の協力的な行動の社会全体への効果は、不利な状況の利用者の行動によって相殺され、全体としては効率性の改善には至らなかった。また、一方向のコミュニケーションとしてメッセージを一方的に送るトリートメントでは、行動の変化は見られなかった。また、チャットテキストを使って、双方向のコミュニケーションの効果を詳細に分析した。各発言をいくつかの分類（戦略・同意/不同意・評価・情報）に分け、発言の頻度とその後のゲームにおける意思決定の関係を調べた。結果、協力的または非協力的な戦略が提案されたかどうかよりも、それらの提案が同意または不同意に繋がっているかどうかの方が重要であることが分かった。
