本研究では、共有資源の持続的な利用のために、その成功に関連している要素のより体系的な検討を行う。特に、資源利用者の多様性（Heterogeneity）、リーダーシップ、コミュニケーションの3つに注目し、検証する。多様な資源利用者としては、例えば、河川の上流・下流における利用などを想定し、上流の農家や工場など資源を積極的に利用するグループと彼ら上流の利用によって自らの資源の利用の効用が影響される下流の都市住民などのグループによる資源の利用を考える。そのような状況下で、どのようなコミュニケーションとリーダーシップによって、利用者の協力を醸成できるかを明らかにする。本研究における資源利用者の多様性は、漁業において、資源の移動によって生産性が異なる漁場における漁と構造が類似している。漁業においては、漁業者は努力量の配分を考えるが、本研究においては、空間的な制約などによりどちらかに依存せざるを得ない状況を考える点で本質的には異なる。コミュニケーションとリーダシップのトリートメントについては、一方向の意思表明と双方向による意思疎通の２つを考える。一方向の意思表明については、別グループのメンバーからの意思表明と同一メンバー間の意思表明の2通り、双方向の意思疎通については、均一なメンバーのみによる話し合いと多様なメンバーを含む話し合いの2通りとする。こうしたトリートメントをコントロール群とそれぞれ比較することで、多様性がもたらす効果や多様性がコミュニケーションやリーダーシップと影響し合うことでもたらされる効果について、明らかにすることができる。
