In recent years, the structure theory of totally disconnected, locally compact groups initiated by George A. Willis in 1994 has led to deep insights into automorphisms and endomorphisms of such groups. On the one hand, the project strives to develop this theory further, i.e., the study of automorphisms and endomorphisms of totally disconnected groups. On the other hand, we shall investigate if (or in which form) the known results from the totally disconnected case can be adapted to more general locally compact groups.
