The aim of the project is the experimental and numerical investigation of the physical mechanisms that cause backward-whirl instabilities. These are to be investigated under special consideration of the contact conditions at the guide chamfers and taking into account inertial and damping forces. A simulation model is to be built which maps the relevant effects. With a suitable simulation model, it is possible to predict tool vibrations and process forces, thus saving time, costs and resources in the development of tools. An increase in the quality of the drilling by an optimized tool geometry without additional active damping elements is the aim of the project.
