本研究は1964年東京オリンピックを契機に隆盛したとされる根性論を題材に、それがなぜ、いかにして今日まで連綿と続いてきたのかという問いを明らかにすることを試みるものである。具体的には、スポーツ、学術、経済の諸言説を系譜学的に記述することを通して、根性論がいかなる経路と論理構成のもと、なぜ日本社会に定位したのかを明らかにすることを目的としている。令和4年度は、根性論の隆盛期である1964年東京オリンピック前後の時期について、朝日新聞の記事を中心に分析を行った。その結果、第1に戦後から1960年頃までは否定的な意味合いで用いられてきた「根性」という言葉が、その後肯定的な意味合いを持つようになったことが確認された。これは、先行研究と同様の傾向である。第2に、「根性」が語られる文脈を分析すると、1960年頃までは「経済・仕事」、「政治・国際関係」と関連付けられていたが、それ以降にスポーツと関連付けられるようになったこと。一方で、それ以降も「経済・仕事」との関連において頻繁に語られていることが明らかとなった。また、当該時期の大松博文や八田一朗といったスポーツ関係者の書籍を分析した結果、現代社会においても根性論が根強く残っているとされるスポーツ界において、反根性論あるいは非根性論とでも呼べる思想が、既に萌芽していた可能性を見出した。今後は、こうしたスポーツ界における反（非）根性論の系譜を丹念に記述することが、重要な課題になると思われる。
