当初の予定に従って、ジュール・ヴェルヌ関係の1次資料、2次資料、フランス社会学とその歴史、演劇論、表象文化論関係図書を収集し、そのための研究調査旅行を行った。そして、これらの資料を舞台構成法、演劇批評、観客の反応などに分類・整理して解析し、ジュール・ヴェルヌ作品の舞台上演状況、ドラマツルギー、舞台装置や技術の特性について検討した。その結果、ヴェルヌ演劇は大掛かりな舞台装置や仕掛けを用い、とても豪華な視覚的表象を実現していたことが確認された。また、上映されたヴェルヌ作品は、原作の小説から大幅に変更されている場合があることが判明した。筋、登場人物、情景など、変更点は多岐にわたる。これらの資料と事実に基づき、当時の演劇論や社会背景、ヴェルヌ演劇実現に尽力した人物の特徴などを考慮しながら、ヴェルヌ作品について社会学的、表象文化論的に考察した結果、次のような見解が得られた。まず、原作小説が舞台にアレンジされるときに加えられた変更は、通常観客が舞台に求める即自的な娯楽性を強めるためのものであった。例えば、人気のある登場人物が小説でよりもよく報われる、強い歓喜・恐怖・驚きを引き起こすような場面が強調される、などである。これらの点は、当時の風俗劇や「夢幻劇」の傾向に合致している。次に、ヴェルヌ演劇に対する観客の反応からは、1870年代・80年代という、普仏戦争敗北直後のフランスの国民感情や、異国への植民地主義的な興味が読み取れる。これらの社会的な感情・感覚を、風俗劇や「夢幻劇」の娯楽性に結びつけたことが、ジュール演劇の特色である。以上の点を明らかにしたことが、本研究の意義・重要性である。
