本研究の目的は、被爆者の主観性に基づく被爆の語りと新聞資料に基づく相対的に客観的な記述を相互引証するシステムを整えることで、長崎の戦中・戦後史に関する語りの継承に寄与することである。第二次世界大戦の終結から72年が経過し、自らの戦争体験を語ることのできる人たちが減少している現在、市民の戦争体験を聞き取り受け継ぐことが喫緊の課題となっている。長崎における原爆被災をめぐる語り継ぎについても同様である。冨永は2007年以降、長崎における被爆をめぐる語りに関する研究を続けてきた。その結果、とりわけ原爆被災という出来事の特異性も影響して、被爆をめぐる語りが原爆炸裂の瞬間とその直後の様相に特化される傾向にあることが明らかになった。このことは、被爆をめぐる語りが原爆投下直後の個人の体験に限定され、長崎という町の戦後史には未解明な部分が多いことをあらわしている。被爆者による主観的な語りを次世代以降の人間が継承するためには、実証的な記述による補完も必要である。主観的な語りと客観的な記述が相互に連関して提示された時、非体験者にも共有可能な被爆体験の語りが浮かび上がるはずである。本研究では、語りを実証する客観的な記述として地方紙の記事を採用した。そこで、2015年より『長崎新聞』に掲載された原爆、被爆関連の記事をデータベース化する作業に取り組んできた。2016年度には、記事データの入力作業を外部に委託したことにより、収録記事を1995年までの3万4千件にまで増加させた。平成29年度中に新聞記事の収録を終了させる予定である(1999年7月以降の記事はすでに有料の記事検索サイトにて参照が可能なため、本データベースの記事収録期間を1945年8月から1999年7月までと設定している)。新聞記事データベースを利用して執筆した長崎の戦後復興と観光行政に関する論文が、2017年4月刊行の『長崎――記憶の風景とその表象』(共著)に掲載されている。
