今日の着物は、着用する「時」、「場所」によって、着用できる着物の種類が決められており、そのルールに従って着用されている。これを「着物の格付け」と呼び、呉服業会をはじめ、着付け教室等において一般化されている。しかしながら、江戸時代以前においては、結婚式等のような特別な日(晴)と、それ以外の普段の日(褻)の着物を分けることはあっても、大奥における儀式を例外とする以外は、今日に見られるような、場に応じた細かな着物の使い分けは存在していなかった。そこで、本研究では現在の着物における「格」がいつ、どのような経緯で誕生したかについて明らかにすることを目的とした。資料には、明治時代以降に刊行された着物の図案集やカタログ、当時の雑誌や新聞記事を用いた。その結果、明治30年代後半より「訪問服」、「散歩服」といった言葉が見られるようになり、それまでの特別な日と普段の日の2種類の着物以外にその中間に位置する外出用の着物として新たな着物の種類が登場することがわかった。加えて、呉服屋のカタログや雑誌の内容に注目すると、大正時代以降それまで商品の紹介にとどまっていたものが、次第に着物を着る時期や場面などについての意見を添えて新商品の提案をしている記事が目立つようになるなど、呉服屋主導による着物の販売戦略が窺えるようになる。従って、①女性たちの外出する機会が増えたこと、及び②呉服屋主導による着物の制作や販売が行われるようになったことが、着物の格付けの誕生・牽引につながっていたことを明らかにした。よって、本研究の意義は現在の着物の着用ルールの中心となっている「格付け意識」の成立過程を明らかにした点にあり、現在に繋がる着物の歴史・文化の正しい理解に貢献できると考える。
