项目摘要

「桑園博士町」の居住者達が、大正元年12月に発足した「村会」の記録である『村会日誌』、土地閉鎖登記簿などから、各居住者の博士町居住期間や居住箇所が明らかになった。「村会」に参加していたのは戦前までに延べ19名、居住区画は全12区画である。大学より借地ということもあり、各戸の区画が当時の札幌の持家層の標準に比べ圧倒的に広かったといえる。最も狭い敷地で211坪、最大は540坪、平均的なものは、一町角を中小路で半分割した、さらに4分の1の405坪であった。また、「村会」でしばしば議題にあがった土地所有問題については、結局昭和27年秋に払い下げが実施されたことが判明している。「博士町」の呼称は、管見であるが、昭和2年9月10日『北海タイムス』紙に最も古い記述を見ることができる。ここには「村会」構成員以外の北大教授の名前も「博士町」住人として記述されている。この記事から判断するに、一般には桑園での北大教授達のコロニーは認知されていたが、その中で「村会」を開催していたことは知られていなかったと推察できる。一方、「博士町」住人は、自ら「博士町」と呼ぶことに照れがあったであろうし、「村会」と自称していることから考えても、当人たちは「大学村」の名称を用いていたのではないだろうか。また、「博士町」の住宅については、前掲新聞記事に「各博士は文化住宅を建て」とあり、文化住宅の外観を呈していたことがわかる。森本厚吉との関連として月刊誌『文化生活』への寄稿をみると、新島善直、田中義麿の2名のコラムを確認できる。特に新島は「クリスマスツリー」と題したコラムを書いている。林学博士そしてクリスチャンとしての立場で、北海道風景の特質と重ね併せた表現をみてとれる。住宅についての直接的な文章ではないが、文化生活に関連した貴重な記述ととらえることができよう。
