スパソ・エリザーロフ修道院の修道僧フィロフェイは「モスクワ=第三のローマ」論を提唱し、ロシアの国家統治の思想を提示した。フィロフェイの「第三のローマ」論には、世俗統治者モスクワ大公を神の代理人とする理想国家の建設を待望する千年王国的夢想が谺している。プスコフという都市は図らずもロシアという国の国家経営の思想を提示したが、こうした思想はプスコフ独自の文化的土壌なくしては生まれえなかった。本研究の目的は、中世から近代にかけてロシアが歩む道を指し示す羅針盤の役割を果たしたプスコフ文化の特異性を考察することによって、プスコフが産出した思想をよりどころに国家的統合を維持し続けたロシアの民族性への洞察をえることであった。この目的のために、美術(プスコフ派イコン絵画、フレスコ画、教会内装飾美術など)、教会建築、『プスコフ年代記』などの歴史記述、『ドヴモント物語』など聖人伝的伝記物語など、多岐にわたる文化領域を個々の対象に見合う方法によって分析し、各分野に共通して見られるプスコフ的性格を抽出した。昨年度は兄弟都市ノヴゴロドまで視野にいれ、教会建築、美術の資料を収集、整理したが、本年度もその作業を継続して行なった。また、新たに中世期プスコフやその兄弟都市ノヴゴロドで編纂された年代記、ノヴゴロドにおいて発掘がすすめられている白樺木皮文書をも研究対象に加え、データ・ベース化の作業を開始した。その結果、得られた結論は以下の通りである。ノヴゴロドの年代記は題材の取捨、記述の展開において、中央ロシア平原のそれとは異なる性格を有する。白樺木皮文書における言語的特徴から、ノヴゴロド・プスコフ圏がモスクワとは根本的に異なる民族的起源をもつことが知られていたが、そこにあらわれる農民,商人など庶民の生活習慣、社会秩序意識からも、同じことが裏づけられる。ノヴゴロド・ブスコフ圏の文化は中部ロシアのそれとは性質を異にする一方、しばしば隣接するリトアニア、カレリア地方のそれとの共通点が見出された。こうした考察の結果、モスクワ公国による強制的な併合までこの文化圏はモスクワから独立した別個の文化圏であり、中部ロシアとは異なる独自の民族性を発展させる可能性があったという昨年度の仮説を検証することができた。
