今回の科研費の交付期間では、主として1972年のブラント政権下のドイツ連邦共和国(BRD)における東方諸条約批准までの時期に限定し、東方領土の放棄の過程がいかにして進行したのかを、政府や主要政党、被追放者集団の公的言論を題材としながら検討した。研究の結果、東方領土領域の放棄が、戦後ドイツのナショナル・アイデンティティの解釈範型の転換と密接に関係していることがわかった。それを私は<帝国>アイデンティティから<ホロコースト>アイデンティティの転換と名づけた。戦後しばらく、BRDではワイマール時代を含むナチス領土拡大以前のドイツの国家的枠組(これを「帝国Reich」と呼ぶ)との連続性を前提としてドイツの領土を考える傾向が強く残っていた。これが<帝国>アイデンティティであり、この枠組に依拠する限り東方領土の放棄は認められないことになる。しかし1960年代にはそれに代わって、「ナチス犯罪」がドイツ人民(民族)に平和のための特別な義務を課しているという別のアイデンティティ範型が影響力を増大した。1969年に成立したブラント政権は、そのような戦後的なドイツのアイデンティティに依拠しながら、ポーランドとの「和解」を一つの課題として新東方政策を展開した。オーデル=ナイセ線の「不可侵性」の承認も、このアイデンティティの解釈範型によって正統化されたのである。これ以後のBRDでは、このアイデンティティの範型が主流となり、被追放者団体が中心となって主張する、東方領土を含んだ「ドイツ帝国」の連続性の主張は傍流化していく。しかし後者の<帝国>アイデンティティも決して消滅したわけではなく、BRDは依然として公式にオーデル=ナイセ線をドイツの国境としては認めなかったのである。今後は、新東方政策から「再統一」にかけての東方領土をめぐる言説の分析(二つのアイデンティティ範型のせめぎ合いとの関連で)が課題になる。
