本研究では、次の2点に関して一通りの解決を与え、その成果を教育現場で試用することを目指した。まず一点は、交付申請書に記したように、「イタリア語らしいイントネーション」とはどのようなものであるかを音響的に正確に記述し、規則化することである。そして、第二点めは、学習者がそこから正しいイントネーションを再現できるような「表記」を教材に施すことである。具体的な成果としては、第一点の「イタリア語らしいイントネーション」の規則化に関しては北部、中部、南部、シチリア出身の計14名のイタリア人の短文朗読発話と自然談話を分析し、以下の10項目の規則を抽出した。(1)肯定文の文尾は、最後のアクセント音節の直前か、その内部で音が下がる、(2)一般疑問文は、文尾で一度肯定文のように下がり、その後で上がる、(3)疑問詞疑問文の文尾は上がらないことが多い、(4)意味の大きな区切りごとにその最後を上げ、ポーズを置く、(5-a)アクセントのあるところは高く発音する、(5-b)ただし、ある語が前後の語を修飾する構文では、後に位置する語のアクセントは高くならない、(5-c)また、朗読調では肯定文の最後の2語はひと続きに高く言う、(6)文中で意味的にいちばん重要な要素を際だたせて高く言い、その後文尾までは低く平らに言う、(7)否定文は動詞を高くその後を低く平らに言うことが多い、(8)同種の項目を列挙する際に、各項目の最終音節あるいはアクセント音節以降から高く平らに言う。第二点の表記の問題に関しては、英語の表記などを検討した結果、高低2段階の線(~_)を基本とし、これに音の高まりを示す山印(/＼)と、文尾での上昇を示すための矢印(↑)を付加する表記法を考案した。さらに、この方式によるイントネーションの試験的解説を「NHKラジオ・イタリア語講座応用編」で実践した。
