本研究では、特殊教育諸学校における養護・訓練担当教員の資質について明らかにするために、ろう学校100校及び肢体不自由養護学校175校の養護・訓練担当教員に対し、調査を行った。有効回答数はろう学校が91%、肢体不自由養護学校が82%であった。養護・訓練の指導において経験年数が多く指導的立場にある者(キャリアあり)と、経験年数が少ない者(キャリアなし)を比較した。主な結果は次の通りである。1.養護・訓練の基本的性格に関する理解(1)キャリアありはキャリアなしに比ベて、養護・訓練と各教科との教育過程編成上の基本的性格おける相違について、正しく認識しており、キャリアなしの約半数は両者の相違が分からないと回答した。(2)養護・訓練の考え方が一般の児童・生徒の指導に役立つかという問については、キャリアあり・なしとも役立つと回答した者が多いが、キャリアなしの約3割は、分からないと回答した。以上から、養護・訓練の基本的性格に関する正しい理解が、養護・訓練担当教員の資質の1つとして不可欠であると考えられた。2.養護・訓練の指導計画の際に必要とされる事項の重要度については、キャリアあり・なしの間では顕著な差が見られなかったが、実施の頻度については、キャリアありの方が高かった。3.養護・訓練の指導の際に必要とされる事項の重要度については、キャリアあり・なしとの間で顕著な差が見られなかったが、キャリアありがより重要とした事項は、「関連する理論・技法の修得」と「自己研修の必要性と研修の機会の積極的な活用」であった。実施の頻度については、キャリアありの方がキャリアなしに比ベて、ほぼ全ての事項において高くなっている。以上から、重要性の認識度よりも、それを実行に移せる条件(専門的理論と技術の修得など)が不可欠であると考えられた。
