本研究の目的は、離散的な群に関する古典的な問題とその応用であった。研究代表者と分担者は、お互いの成果をいくつかの研究集会で発表し、また関連する分野の研究者と研究成果を持ち寄って討議した。そのための研究費のかなりの部分を研究打ち合わせ旅費として使った。また今年度入ったワークステーション用にX-端末を導入した。この研究によって得られた主な成果(途中経過も含む)は次の通りである。1.離散群(特に有限群)の部分群の個数や、ふたつの群を結ぶ準同型写像の個数に関する合同式。2.整数論、作用素環、位相幾何学との関連。3.有限群の表現論との関係。本研究でもっとも力を入れて研究した第一の課題については、ふたつの群を結ぶ準同型写像の個数に関するいくつかの合同式を拡張し、拡張したフロベニウス予想を特別の場合に証明した。得られた結果は、順次整理公表の予定である。
