本年の研究では、見せかけの組物を遺構の中から選び出し、その意味を考察した。1.室生寺金堂(平安時代初期) 組物は大斗肘木で簡単だが、すべての組物に内側の梁鼻が出る。規模は正堂部分が三間四面であって、内側から繋虹梁が架かるように見える。しかし、内部の母屋は奥行が一間であって、側面の中央には繋ぎ梁がかかっていない。外側に飾りとして虹梁鼻が付いていることが分る。これは四面庇系の建築(即ち屋根が入母屋か寄棟)では外側の組物をすべて同じ形で統一しようとする、デザイン上の要請があったことがわかる。現在の遺構では最も早い見せかけの細部表現である。2.当麻寺曼茶羅堂(平安時代後期、1161年) 入側正面に特殊な組物が用いられる。外側から見ると大斗肘木であるが、内側では普通の肘木となっており、斗が乗って天井の桁を支えている。すなわち外側が虹梁鼻で内側が通常の肘木という部材が登場する。これは外を見せる手法と、内部につくりたい造作が矛盾するための、解決案である。この様な形の部材は、12世紀の宇治上神社本殿をはじめとし、13世紀に10例弱を発見した。14世紀以降にはみられないようで、過渡的な手法と考えられる。3.長弓寺本堂(1279) 外側の組物はすべて出三斗に統一されている。しかし内部から見ると内側が無いものが2箇所ある。また内側がある場合も、すべて虹梁は大斗の上に乗っている。出三斗は柱上の枠肘木の上に虹梁が乗るのが原則で、また構造的にも理にかなっている。長弓寺の出三斗では外側に見える虹梁鼻はすべて外側だけに見せかけて引掛けられた鼻部材である。だから組物はすべてが見せかけのもの、と断定してよい。中世の本堂建築においては、出三斗がしかるべきもの、という判断が成立していて、そうでない手法を取らざるを得ない時の、便宜的な方法といってよいであろう。
