触るという感覚の原理を解明し、高品位な触覚ディスプレイの社会的普及を目的として研究を遂行した。触ることにより生じる皮膚の変形や内部の現象を理論的に検証し設計のための知見を得た上で、電気刺激による皮膚感覚提示デバイス、簡易で普及しやすい把持力提示デバイス及び力覚と皮膚感覚を統合した操縦型ロボットハンドシステムを実現した。さらに、視覚障害者の目を代行する額型電気触覚ディスプレイの工学的基礎を与え、社会的普及へ貢献した。
