The Creation of Archives of Rare Historical Materials on Central Asian Area Studies for Academic and General Use

Research of rare historical materials on Central Asian Area Studies, mainly of visual and photo materials, was conducted at Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, Institute of Oriental Studies, Institute of Material Culture and the Russian Geographical Association in St. Petersburg, Russia, and at the archive of Ministry of Culture and Central National Archive of cinema, photo and phono materials in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. According to the agreement of the owners of a part of those materials researched by the project, a series of materials were digital copied and 6 CDs, 2 of which contained old maps from personal collections in Tashkent and 4 of which contained photographs from Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, were published. The final report The Creation of Archives of Rare Historical Materials on Central Asian Area Studies for Academic and General Use (Osaka : National Museum of Ethnology, 2005 ; in Japanese) describes the details on the project. As a result of the project, possible form in the near future of the creation of digital archive of rare historical materials for Central Asian area studies among Japan, Central Asia and Russia would be found in co-making, co-ownership and co-storing-up of digital copies of rare materials in a form of CDs just for reading (seeing), running a search and demonstration.
