In this research, an integrated usage survey has been conducted in dialects on the Japan Sea coast, by paying attention to geographical and generational dynamics. The glottogram technique, in which linguistic survey is conducted for each generation along a linear area, is a new technique originally developed by Japanese dialectology. This technique has been applied to Japan archipelago diagonally from Hokkaido to Kyushu until now. Dynamics of dialects on the Japan Sea coast have been ascertained in this research.In the first fiscal year, researchers belonging to various institutions gathered together and discussed methods for unification of techniques of investigation. Preparatory surveys have been also conducted. Areas of survey for each participant were also decided.In the second fiscal year, actual surveys were conducted along the Japan Sea coast in order to draw glottograms, researchers were participants of this research and graduate and postgraduate cooperators. The acquired data were electronically coded soon after the research. The data were distributed to researchers concerned.In the third fiscal year, surveys were further conducted to cover all the planned research area. Glottograms were drawn by the participants. Figures were easily drawn making use of personal computers owned by each participant. New dialect forms and unnoticed dialect forms were found and noticeable geographical differences along the Japan Sea coast were ascertained. By comparing with former studies, differences from the Pacific Ocean coast were observed and patterns of diffusion from Tokyo were ascertained.A report was published at the end of the year and was distributed among researchers who are interested in this kind of research. The related study will flourish because of this report. A part of the attested data was reported in an International Congress of Dialectology held in Canada
