高度経済成長以降、歴史的建造物の保存が各地で問題となりはじめ、近年ではようやく保存する価値に対する認識が深まってきている。しかしながら、バブル期の沈静状態を脱しはじめると、取り壊しが再燃し、一方では景観という名の下に行われる歴史的価値を損ねたような再生事例が増加してきていることも事実である。こうした想像もしなかった新たな事態を受けて、日本建築学会歴史意匠委員会・近代建築小委員会では、歴史家の立場から問題点を抽出し、整理していく必要を痛感し検討を続けてきた。今回の企画研究ではより客観的な評価軸の検討として、保存の割合を印象として語るのではなく、残存率という再生後の建築面積と旧状の建築面積の比、あるいは立面でも同様の比率を用いることの是非を検討するなど、従来の建築史という専門領域から一歩踏みだし、現実に再生された事例に則しながら検討を行った。また、歴史的価値として失われた部分と残された部分の適否、歴史的な意義の検討など、より総合的、学術的な評価軸の検討を行った。事例として取り上げたのは近代建築から民家、洋風住宅、洋風建築、さらに現代建築に至るまで多岐にわたり、各地の状況を踏まえるために、地区ごとに特色のある事例を選出している。評価軸としては歴史的価値の保全の度合い、その手法の是非、デザインとしての評価など複数の評価軸を用いながら検討している。以上の成果は、より広く建築家や関連の人々にも伝わるように『住宅建築』に連載として公表しつつある。
