今年度は、（１）福利概念の中核的意味の明確化、（２）ニーズ概念のもつ客観的側面と関係的側面を両立させる議論の構築、（３）福利概念とニーズ概念に基づく倫理的枠組みの構築と具体的事例の検討、という３つの課題のうち、２年目として（２）に取り組むとともに、肉食をめぐる社会のあり方についても検討を行った。課題（２）については、S. ReaderやG. Brockによるニーズ論を再検討することで、人間にとって、家畜化された動物のような特定の関係にある動物のもつニーズが、規範的な意味をもつものとして理解されるべきであり、人間に責任を生じさせる可能性を検討している。また、人間がそれぞれの動物に向けるべき理解の探究として、特定の動物のニーズにたいする人間の責任という、研究計画時点で想定されていた観点だけでなく、人間が特定の動物にたいして現にもっている、食べるための存在としての理解がなぜ正当化されないのかについての検討も行った。動物を食べるための存在として理解する見方は、当然のものとみなされ、正当化の必要すらないと考えられがちである。そうした暗黙の前提の存在は、動物倫理の議論にたいする否定的な理解を知らず知らずのうちに支えたり、動物倫理の議論が提示する問題を深刻なものとして捉えて向かい合うことを妨げたりといった形で人々に影響を与えるおそれがある。そのため、肉食を疑問視させない社会構造のあり方を論じたM. Joyの議論に注目し、動物にたいして現にもっている見方そのものの問題に気づかせてそれを揺らがせる必要性について論じ、「動物のウェルフェアをめぐる理解と肉食主義」としてまとめた。
