本研究では、認知心理学的アプローチにより次の問題を解明することを目的とした.(a)文字から単語のプロソディを読み取る過程を実験的に解明する.(b)単語の読み過程における作動記憶の役割について理論的に検討する.この研究目的を達成するために,2つの実験課題を用いた.(1)強勢判断課題(stress judgment task)と(2)韻判断(rhyme judgment task)である.強勢判断課題は,アクセントの位置を直接たずねるものであり,その判断には,必ず単語のプロソディについての情報が必要となる,韻判断は,同じく音韻情報についての判断課題だが,プロソディではなく音素情報についての判断が求められる,39人の被験者が,合計192の単語対について判断を行った.384個の2モ-ラ単語を,半数の対では韻を踏むように,残りの対では韻を踏まないように組み合わせた.96対に強勢判断を,96対について韻判断を求めた.また,それぞれ半数の対は漢字で,残りは仮名文字で呈示された.従属変数はいずれも反応時間とエラー数であった.判断に要した反応時間の分析から,次のことが示された.(a)強勢判断の方が,韻判断よりも判断時間が長い.(b)韻判断課題では,漢字よりも仮名文字提示の方が反応時間が短い.(c)一方,強勢判断では,漢字と仮名文字の呈示条件間に判断時間の差は見られない.また,エラー数の分析からは次のことが示された.(d)強勢判断の方が,韻判断よりもエラーが多い.(e)韻判断課題では,漢字よりも仮名呈示の方がエラーが少ない.(f)一方,強勢判断においては、漢字と仮名文字の提示条件間にエラー数の差は見られない.(g)ただし,韻判断の漢字条件のエラーでは,踏韻の対をそうでないと判断するケースが多い.(h)これに対して,強勢判断では,漢字,仮名いずれも,異なっている対を同じであると判断するケースが多い.以上の結果は,推計学的に確認された.韻情報については,仮名文字は直接それを表現しているが,漢字はそうではない.漢字の場合,音韻的な表現に変換された後,韻判断が行われる.一方,アクセント情報については,仮名,漢字,いずれの表記でも表現されていない.そのため,いずれの条件でも,強勢判断は音韻的表現に変換された後に行われる.この強勢判断の遂行成績は,構音抑制によって著しく低下することから,音韻的表現への変換には作動記憶の音韻ループが関与していると考えられる.また,強勢判断で,漢字と仮名の間に差が見られなかったことから,ここで必要となる情報は,意味的な成分を媒介としているのかも知れないと考察した.
