本研究では,認知心理学的アプローチにより次の問題を解明することを目的としていた.(a)韻律情報は,我々の記憶システムに含まれているのであろうか.(b)韻律情報の活性化が我々の言語認知を促進するのであろうか.この研究目的を達成するために,まず,100あまりの文献を検討し,実験材料及び厳密な手続きを決定した.最終的に,人間の言語認知・記憶における韻律情報の役割を検討するために,系列再生法による記憶実験をおこなった.実験には3つの条件が設定されていた.コントロール条件では,通常の系列再生のみが求められた.リズム条件では,刺激材料の呈示を3つずつに区切っておこない,リズムを付加した.抑揚条件においては,刺激項目の3番目と6番目を高いイントネーションで,9番目の項目を低いイントネーションで呈示した.いずれの条件においても,刺激の呈示速度は,1項目/500msec.でなされ,9項目の再生が要求された.各条件とも5リストが本試行であり,合計で15リストからなる実験セッションが設定されていた.被験者は,練習試行のあと,条件の順序に関してランダマイズされた15リストに従事した.再生は書記によっておこなわれ,2つの指標によって評価された.1つは完全リスト正答数であり,もう1つは系列位置正答数である.完全リスト正答数は,各条件について,9項目すべてが正答となっているリストの数である.系列位置正答数による指標では,正確な系列位置に再生された各項目の数が,条件別,系列位置ごとに集計された.実験の結果,完全リスト正答数によっても,系列位置正答数によっても,リズム条件の再生成績が他の2つの条件に比べて高かった.そして,抑揚条件は,完全リスト正答数において,コントロール条件よりも正答数が多かった.これらの結果は,推計学的にも支持された.本研究により,韻律情報が記憶システムに保持されているとともに,それらの情報が音素情報の保持を促進するということが示された.ただし,時間的長短からなるリズムによる影響と,イントネーションから作りだされる抑揚による影響の違いについては,今後の検討の必要性を残している.
