本研究では,地域企業のイノベーションとりわけ新製品開発活動に焦点を当て,地域ネットワークの活用がイノベーションをいかに促進するのか,また,イノベーションを経営成果に結びつけるためにはいかなる行動が必要になるかを解明した。分析の結果,仮説1「ネットワークの活用は地域企業のイノベーションを促進する」,仮説3「業界環境は地域企業のイノベーションに影響を与える」,仮説4「企業規模は地域企業のイノベーションに影響を与えるJ,仮説5「経営戦略は地域企業のイノベーションに影響を与える」,仮説6「組織能力は地域企業のイノベーションに影響を与える」の5仮説は概ね支持された.他方,仮説2「地域の能力は地域企業のイノベーションを促進する」は重回帰分析では支持されなかった.しかしながら,パス解析の結果は,「地域の能力」という構成概念の1次元である「地域の産業政策の有効性」が,企業と産業界ならびに官・学界との日常的な交流を促進すると同時に,企業の「自社の強み」を強化することによって間接的に地域企業のイノベーションを促進している実態が明らかにされた。本研究の第1の意義は,先行研究で検討されてきた関係を,地域企業を対象に定量的に解明した点である.第2の意義は,変数間の因果関係を詳細に記述するモデルを開発し,イノベーションの規定因を解明した点にある。これによって,従来,2変数間の関係(ネットワークの活用=イノベーション,地域の能力=イノベーション,環境=イノベーション,戦略=イノベーション,組織能力=イノベーション)として分析されてきた地域企業のイノベーションの全体像を明らかにしたのである。本研究の実践的含意は次の2点である.第1は,地域企業がイノベーションを実現するためには,ネットワークを自社の強みの蓄積と経営戦略とに結びつける必要があることを示した点である.環境変化に受動的に対応するような新製品開発や,単なる研究開発要員の増強だけでは経営成果に結びつく新製品開発を行うことは困難なのである.第2は,地域企業のイノベーションを促すためには,有効な地域の産業政策も必要であることを示した点である.地域の様々な主体が有機的連携を保持し得るような地域の産業政策が展開されれば,地域に所在する各主体の全体的な能力の向上が実現され得るかもしれない.地域の産業政策はこうした地域に所在する様々な主体が相互補完的な関係を通じて共進化し得るような内容であることが望まれているのである.
