1. The production of programs: Videodiscs titled "The use of the new media in higher education in Japan today," and "Distance education for tomorrow" were produced with the broad support of the people involved, both to make use of and to introduce the special interactive characteristics of the videodisc.2. A learning experiment with educational materials: Continuing from 1984, using the two-way CATV Hi-OVIS system a learning experiment involving viewers of the "Hi-OVIS Community College" was carried out. This year a method which really involved the viewers was employed, both proving that distance can be more than lecturing, and receiving the high evaluation of the monitors. Also, the Hi-OVIS educational material was broadcast on 7 CATV stations around Japan. These are one-way CATV stations, but the results of an investigation showed that there was much interest in two-way programs.3. The international exchange of information: The exchange of information related to the use of new media by higher education, including the exchange of educational materials, was carried out. Videodisc educational materials were received from America, the United Kingdom, Australia, and West Germany. Many research reports were also collected. With regard to the use of telecomputing in higher education, questions and answers and information exchange was carried out via telecomputing, and a computer conference was also held. In terms of real educational content, investigators became learners, and teleconferencing was shown to be a highly cost effective educational system.4. The development of interactive educational materials: From an investigation of the softwear available it became clear that authoring systems for the development of CAI materials are inadequate. Therefore, using computer language, a CAI program for teaching experimentation procedures in physics was produced.
