本研究は、英国の歴史家G.G.Zerffi(1820-1892)、及び彼の諸著作、とりわけThe Science of History(1879、London)の研究・分析を中心にした、19世紀英国の史学理論・史学史研究である。Zerffiはハンガリーに生まれ、1848年の独立運動失敗後、英国に亡命・帰化し、歴史家としての第二の自己を確立した。本研究では、彼の経歴を、The Royal Historical Societyの創設に参加した経緯を中心に解明し、これまで彼の経歴の最も詳しい記述であったThe Dictionary of National Biographyの記述の中に、いくつかの事実的誤りを発見した。The Science of Historyは、ヨーロッパの史学理論・史学史の大きな流れを初めて記述したものとして、他に類書を見ない重要な書物である。本研究では、この内容構成の分析を行った。この著作は、日本の歴史家のためにヨーロッパの歴史学とは何かを書くよう、日本の太政官修史局が、Zerffiに依頼したものであったため、この依頼の経緯・顛末の研究は19世紀史学理論の比較研究を可能にしてくれた。当時、歴史に対する理論的アプローチは極めて少なかったが、Zerffiの30以上に上る著書・論文の研究を通して、彼の哲学的諸問題への関心、東洋に関する関心の深さ、及び美術史という自身の専門分野も持っていたことが、このThe Science of Historyの著述を可能にしてくれた学問的背景であったことが解明できた。Zerffiが活躍したThe Svnday Lecture Societyの資料を整理・分析した結果、このSocietyは、伝統的なアカデミズムに対し、当時最新の諸科学を専攻する学者の学際的なsocietyであったこと、この様なZerffiの知的背景が、彼に初めて"science"という用語を史学理論に使わせた事が解明できた。今後は、これらの研究成果を基礎に、近代史学とはなんであったのかを史学理論的側面から、総合的に研究・解明していきたいと考えている。
