半単純リー群の指標は、いわゆるハリシュ・チャンドラの微分方程式の解になっている。この事実に注目して、まずハリシュ・チャンドラ方程式の代数解析的特徴づけを確立することが近年の急務であった。我々は、これが正則型ホロノミー系になることを発見し、ホロノミー系の理論を適用することによって、特異点のモノドロミー等との関係を明確にした。特に、指標のモノドロミー表現と、ワイル群のスプリンガー表現の密接な関係が明らかになり、指標の、いわゆる特異点的分類が可能になった。これらの理論は、さらに、近年発達の著しい、ジョセフらによる原始イデアルの分類論との結びつきを一層密接にした点が注目される。代数解析、および代数幾何的手法の表現論における有効性を示していると思う。これと関係して、分担者谷崎による、ホツジ加群とヘツケ環の表現は、この点を更に明白に立ち出している。つい最近完成したばかりの、斎藤盛彦氏の理論を、ある群論的多様体(旗多様体)上のオブジェクトに適用することにより、従来のトポロジカルなK群で得られた以上の明解な定理が得られている。これは更に今後の発展が期待される分野である。これらの理論の基礎をなす、ホロノミー系の理論に対する理解を深めるために、研究者向けの講義録を編集したのも何かの役に立つだろう。他に、保型関数論と関係して、自己共役コーンに付随するゼータ関係と、特異点の不変量に関する研究、P進L関数の特殊値の研究、トーラス埋込みと特異点の研究等がある。
