Analysis of the Fetal Functional Maturity

In the management of the high-risk pregnancy, the evaluation of the fetal functional maturity is most important. Recently, so called "fetal behavior" has been regarded as the most reliable information.In this study, the quantitative analysis of fetal behavior concerning fetal movements, fetal heart rate, fetal reaction to sound stimulation, fetal breathing movement, fetal eye movement in relation to REM and non-REM sleep state were carried out. And effects of drug on the fetal nervous system were also analyzed.In the complicated cases, such as EPH and IUGR, fetal nervous functions were clearly suppressed. (1) The number and strength of the fetal movement were suppressed, (2) the number of acceleration at fetal movement were also suppressed, (3) the inclination of acceleration reduced, however the the height of acceleration remained unchanged, (4) the reaction to the sound stimulation was suppressed in the complicated cases, (5) the fetal breathing movement diminished clearly, (6) The fetal eye movement was also suppressed. Concerning the effect of drug to the fetus, fetal movement and FHR accerelation were accurately diminished by the administration of chlorpromazine or haloperidol even in normal serum concentration. On the other hand, anticonvulsant (Phenytoin and Phenobarbital) showed no depressive effect on the fetus under the normal serum drug concentration.
