The living environment which encompasses human lives differs from country to country, as it is influenced by many factors, including climate and nationality. Though the Japanese culture has been strongly influenced by the culture of China, systematic and mutually satisfactory understanding of the relationship between the Japanese and the Chinese from the standpoint of living science, such as clothing, food and housing, has not yet been established. This international research project aims to clarify the present situation and problems to be solved in the field of living science and the environment through the cooperation of Chinese and Japanese scientists, based on international friendship and a formal academic agreement between North-West Textile University in Xi-an, China and Nara Women's University. We shall investigate not only pressing problems, we shall also endeavor to conduct research that will lead to an ideal living environment with long-term implications in each field, clothi … More ng, food and housing. These problems will be the focus of both material science and cultural science, as they strive to find answers to these problems in the field of living science. This research must also be developed to search out ways of maintaining acceptable living conditions, taking the basic cultural and social characteristics of man into consideration. This research project, which is being conducted by North-West Textile University, involves fiber, textile and apparel technologies that deal primarily with clothing materials, the substances with which human is most intimate, i.e., the evaluation of the properties and performance of fiber and fibrous materials used in clothing and the home environment, and the study of clothing life and housing from the standpoint of cultural science. This is one of the most important tasks we face in trying to realize an ideal living environment, one that is healthy and comfortable for human living in the modern world, and our cooperative research may be one of the first steps taken to investigate this field from the standpoint of living science.
