水田稲作の視点に強く縛られてきた従来の民俗学研究では、各地に存在した『低湿地』は生産性の低い貧しい土地であるとして捉えられてきた。しかし、漁撈・狩猟・採集といった複合生業の視点から低湿地を眺めると、水田稲作の視点だけでは捉えることのできない低湿地に適応した人々の暮らしぶりが見えてきた。今年度は、低湿地を舞台として営まれた漁撈・狩猟・採集といった生業活動のあり方とその稲作との複合関係について、昭和初期に時間軸を設定して聞き取り調査を行った。その結果、稲作に過度に特化することなく、さまざまな生業を複合することによって、低湿な環境をうまく利用して暮らす人々の知恵についてもある程度明らかにすることができた。具体的には、鹿児島県種子島の調査からは、低湿な水田地帯を舞台として伝統的な鴨猟が行われ、それが稲作を生業の中心とする人々にとって重要な農閑期の自給的生業活動になっていたことがわかった。ことに鴨猟が稲作民の動物性たんぱく質の獲得に果した役割は大きかったものと想像される。またツキアミと呼ぶごく単純な手網を用いた鴨猟のあり方は、銃猟が普及する以前の民間に伝承される狩猟法として注目された。同様に手網を用いた素朴な鴨猟が伝承されている石川県大聖寺における調査からは、水田稲作を生業の中心としながらも、鴨猟が農閑期における主要な現金収入源として位置付けられてきたことがわかった。自給的なたんぱく質獲得のための狩猟活動という意味合いから一歩進んで、この場合には稲作民における現金収入の方途として鴨猟が注目されていたといえる。
